Geraint Thomas had to settle for bronze after an early crash ruined his chances of gold in the men's individual time trial at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
The Welshman's eagerly anticipated duel with Aussie, and eventual gold medallist, Rohan Dennis was over within two minutes when Thomas misjudged an early corner and clipped the barriers, which sent him tumbling to the tarmac.
It cost him around 30 seconds and, at the time of the incident, commentator Chris Boardman said: "That's it at this level. He can't recover from this, surely. Not at this level."
But, remarkably, Thomas was second when he went through the first time check at just under nine kilometres, trailing leader Dennis by around 30 seconds.
Twenty minutes into his ride, Thomas then appeared to be complaining of an issue with his bike. He was on the radio to his team and gesticulating to the support car, but refused to pack it in.
Try as he might, though, he was unable to eat away at the 30 seconds he had lost and eventually took the bronze medal, finishing two seconds behind England's Fred Wright, and 28 seconds behind two-time world champions Denis.
Thomas wasn't the only rider to go down in the second wave. England's Dan Bigham, who had been moving nicely and threatening the medals, misjudged a corner just over half hour into his ride and put it in the barriers. He was thrown over the handle bars, and flipped over onto the ground. His bike was lodged in the railings, leading to a bike change and a significant delay, ending his medal hopes.
The other Welshman in the race, Owain Doull, finished seventh.
