Stockbridge Mayor Jayden Williams, who became Georgia’s youngest mayor after a campaign focused on accountability and transparency, has been temporarily stripped of some official privileges amid an investigation into his alleged spending.

According to the New York Post, the Stockbridge City Council voted 5-0 last Friday to suspend the 22-year-old mayor’s city-issued credit card, limit his access to certain city resources and direct him to return official property, including purchasing cards and access badges.
The move comes just six months after Williams took office.
Probe launched over ‘information’ shared with officials
The city council initiated an investigation after “information” was presented to the city’s finance department and city attorney, though officials have not disclosed details of the allegations.
Officials said the measures were taken only to protect city operations while the investigation is underway.
“Mayor Williams has not been charged with any crime,” officials said, adding that the restrictions were meant to “preserve the integrity of city operations during the investigative process.”
Mayor says he wants independent inquiry
Williams has said he supports a full investigation and wants the process to remain fair and transparent.
“Mayor Williams welcomes a full and independent investigation and looks forward to the opportunity to address any allegations through the proper process,” a statement posted on his Facebook page said.
The mayor has also taken legal action, claiming city leaders must follow a fair and open procedure.
City property returned, cards deactivated
Williams was asked to appear at Stockbridge City Hall by Monday noon to hand over city-issued items but reportedly did not show up. Elton Alexander, the city’s mayor pro tem, said the city could deactivate the cards remotely and ensure they were secured.
“We could deactivate. Pretty much handle all of that electronically,” Alexander said. He added that the investigation is expected to take around 30 to 45 days.
Young mayor’s rise to power
Williams, a political science graduate from Clark Atlanta University, won the mayoral election in 2025 after defeating two-time incumbent Anthony Ford by 420 votes.
His campaign focused on “unity, accountability and community-driven progress”. “Beating a two-time incumbent is huge, and it just shows that Stockbridge is ready for some change,” Williams had earlier told The Atlanta Voice.
‘New era’ promised for Stockbridge
Williams became Georgia’s youngest African American mayor and had promised to modernise Stockbridge, a city with a population of about 36,000.
He said he did not want the city to become a “mini-Atlanta” or “mini-New York City” but wanted it to become an urban, modern community.
Before becoming mayor, Williams served as Georgia’s youngest planning commissioner and was involved with the Stockbridge Youth Council.
