Saba Lobjanidze’s miss was the moment of the match, but the story of the game was Giorgi Mamardashvili’s goalkeeping. He made 11 saves, one of them a save-of-the-tournament contender, and radiated calm even when Georgia were under severe pressure.

He cuts inside Holes on the edge of the area but shoots wide of the far post. It wasn’t a sitter but it was Georgia’s best chance of the match in open play.

“I think that’s a ridiculous penalty decision,” says Joe Johnson. “The defender’s arm was away from his body because he and an attacker were grappling – absolutely normal behaviour, and it could have been either of them in that position. When he felt the contact, the defender immediately tried to move his arm out of the way. And in any case, the Georgians got a sitting duck of a chance from that passage of play. Just because you can freeze a frame in an ‘incriminating’ way doesn’t mean that the decision is right.”
The law is such an ass. That said, I sympathise with the problem of determining intent, because cheating is more widespread and sophisticated than ever. In this case Hranac was trying to get his arm out of the way. But if you change the law, players will soon learn to simulate lack of intent or at least to create doubt. I guess that’s preferable to the current situation but it’s still not ideal.

“Afternoon Rob,” says Jon Collin. “Re: the little genius arriving in Manchester, I remember City signing striker Mikheil Kavelashvili not long after and there was some fanzine speculation as to whether they had discovered an untapped talent stream in the Caucasus or whether Kinkladze just needed a mate, possibly to go out for dinner with. I remember thinking that he was bound to be amazing, anyway, but three goals in 30-odd games before being shuffled out on loan tells its own story.”
He scored in the derby on his debut didn’t he? That’s the only thing I remember about him, although it might be a false memory.

Georgia could be 45 minutes away from an historic victory after a dramatic, VARtastic half in Hamburg. Adam Hlozek had a goal disallowed for handball, then Robin Hranac was penalised for handball on the stroke of half time. Georges Mikautadze put the penalty away, and there was still time for Giorgi Mamardashvili to make a magnificent save from Patrick Schick.
That save was Mamardashvili’s eighth of the half, at least two of which were top-class.

43 min “I lived in Czech in 1998,” says Ben Dunn. “I saw the Prague derby - a local bribed a security guard to get us in. The stadium was packed and the concrete cracked. I saw Czech vs Estonia, 4-1 if I remember. Nedved was by far the best player on the field, and had a shout for best in the world. I lived in a town called Jirkov.”
I’d have to check but I think that game was on 14 October 1998. IIRC the Czech Republic were 4-0 up at half-time after a goal from Nedved, two from Patrik Berger and an own goal from Estonia’s Janek Meet.

Another long throw from the right caused problems. It bounced off a defender towards Hlozek, whose close-range shot was brilliantly blocked by Mamardashvili. The ball rebounded into the face of Hlozek, then onto his left arm and into the net. This should be disallowed.

They were slightly before my time but sound utterly thrilling. One of these days I’ll watch the full game of their 4-1 win at Upton Park, which somebody has kindly uploaded to YouTube. The anthems
The Georgia players, some with their eyes closed, are singing their anthem as if it’s the last time they’ll ever have the privilege. As somebody who has never really experienced the joys of patriotism, it’s almost spine-tingling.
Here come the players, all wearing rather lovely kits. The Czech Republic’s is here, and this is Georgia’s.
Georgia’s two forwards, Georges Mikautadze and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, have both bent hurt in the warm-up. No suggestion yet that they will miss the game, but it’s not exactly ideal preparation.
And this is an equally good piece on the Czech Republic goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek, once of Everton and Hyde United.
This is a really nice piece from earlier in the year on David Webb, Georgia’s assistant manager.

[Florian] Wirtz has an excellent first touch, changes pace skilfully and has great positional awareness on the pitch; just see his goal against Scotland.
[Jamal] Musiala is virtually impossible to get off the ball and he can beat an opponent from a standing start. When the opposing teams have parked the bus and lined up their players in front of goal, he is able to find solutions. He was named player of the match in the first game and scored for the second consecutive game against Hungary.
This is the last day of the second round of group games, and also the last of the 2pm kick-offs in this tournament. Life moves pretty fast, eh.

Well that escalated quickly. Georgia and the Czech Republic have only played one game at Euro 2024, and they played pretty darn well too, but they are already at the precipice of a great crossroads. Defeat for either team today would leave them needing snookers reach the last 16.
Georgia were involved the most enjoyable game of the tournament to date, a pulsating 3-1 defeat to Turkey, while the Czech Republic gave Portugal enough of a scare that Cristiano Ronaldo felt compelled to dance on their grave when Francisco Conceicao scored an injury-time winner. Let’s hope for more excitement today.
