Georgia Supreme Court tosses Harris’ murder conviction in hot car case

ATLANTA — The Georgia Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned the murder conviction of Justin Ross Harris, who was tried for leaving his son in a hot car.

The court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that Harris did not receive a fair trial because days of testimony detailing his extramarital sexual relationships should not have been allowed. Harris, who was sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole, is now entitled to a new trial on the murder charge that he purposefully left his 22-month-old son Cooper in his SUV to die.

The court upheld convictions against Harris for exchanging graphic text messages to an underage girl, for which he was sentenced to 12 years in prison. He has been in custody since 2014.
