Georgia Senate approves putting Clarence Thomas statue on Capitol grounds

ATLANTA — The Georgia Senate on Monday approved on a party-line vote a measure to place a monument honoring U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on the Capitol grounds.

State Sen. Ben Watson, a Savannah Republican, urged his colleagues to honor the Pin Point native, saying Thomas has “served with distinction” in the U.S. Supreme Court. Watson said he lives about two miles from Pin Point.

State Sen. Jason Anavitarte, a Dallas Republican, sponsored Senate Bill 326, but Watson presented the bill on the floor because Thomas is from Watson’s district.
