Georgia House Republicans have chosen to maintain their leadership team for the upcoming two-year term. At a recent gathering held at the state Capitol, Jon Burns of Newington was renominated as speaker, a position that holds significant influence within the state government.
The full House is set to vote on Burns' position when it reconvenes in January. Despite losing two seats in the recent election, Republicans still maintain a majority in the House, with a projected 100 seats compared to the Democrats' 80.
Burns, a resident of Effingham County, has a background in the farm supply business and assumed the role of speaker in November 2022 following the passing of former speaker David Ralston.
During his address to the House chamber, Burns highlighted the accomplishments of the Republican party in the previous session, which included tax reductions, infrastructure investments, funding for pre-k programs, literacy initiatives, efforts to combat illegal immigration, and tougher penalties for certain crimes.
Looking ahead to the next legislative session, Burns outlined priorities such as investing in education, expanding healthcare access, and potentially considering Medicaid expansion. He also emphasized the party's commitment to supporting taxpayers, businesses, and families across Georgia.
In response to a tragic shooting incident at Apalachee High School, Burns expressed the intention to address school safety, mental health support, gun detection measures, and responsible gun storage policies in 2025, with similar considerations being discussed in the Georgia Senate.
Other key positions within the House leadership team were also reaffirmed, with Rep. Jan Jones as House Speaker Pro Tem, Rep. Chuck Efstration as majority leader, Rep. James Burchett as whip, Rep. Houston Gaines as vice chair, and Rep. Bruce Williamson III as caucus chair.
