Georgia House Republicans have approved a bill that mandates all eligible police and sheriff's departments to assist in identifying and detaining undocumented immigrants for deportation. The decision, with a 97-74 vote, comes in response to a tragic incident involving a Venezuelan man accused of fatally assaulting a nursing student at the University of Georgia.
The suspect, a 26-year-old Venezuelan national, was arrested on murder and assault charges following the death of the 22-year-old nursing student. The victim, a student at Augusta University’s Athens campus, was found deceased after failing to return from a morning run in a wooded area.
