It is the golden age of Georgia football! The Bulldogs won the biggest blowout national championship game in the College Football Playoff and BCS era.
Quarterback Stetson Bennett and Georgia started hot en route to a 65-7 win over TCU. The Horned Frogs responded to Georgia’s early 10-0 lead, but TCU could not compete. Georgia poured on 55 unanswered points after TCU’s first quarter touchdown. Sixty-five points are the most Georgia has scored all season.
Nobody expected the national championship game to be so uncompetitive. How did we get here?
TCU turned the ball over three times in the first half, which helped Georgia build a 31-point lead at halftime. It was clear that quarterback Max Duggan and TCU were overmatched against Georgia. The Horned Frogs failed to run the ball effectively (36 rushing yards on 28 attempts). Duggan and company faced obvious passing situations for most of the game.
Georgia sacked Duggan five times and held TCU to 152 passing yards. Georgia was ultra efficient on offense. The Bulldogs converted nine of 13 third-down attempts and scored on their first six possession. It was clear that TCU did not have a championship defense.
Brock Bowers and Adonai Mitchell had impressive contested touchdown catches.
The Dawgs saved their best performance of the season for last. The offensive line was outstanding. Georgia ran for 254 yards on 44 attempts and did not allow a sack.
Defensively, Javon Bullard, who left with a shoulder injury, intercepted a pair of Max Duggan passes and recovered a fumble. Senior safety Christopher Smith forced a fumble on TCU’s second drive of the game.
The national championship was a perfect ending for Stetson Bennett, Christopher Smith and other Georgia seniors.
