A new TV show shot in the North East starring Denise Welch is set to delight comedy fans when it airs for the first time on Dave.
'Dead Canny,' written by former Consett teacher Anna Costello, centres around a questionable young psychic from County Durham, whose ability to see dead people not only earns her a few quid down the local pub but also lands her as the prime suspect in a murder enquiry.
The show has been filmed entirely in Consett as part of a collaboration between UKTV and TriForce Creative Network that aims to support new writers. North East viewers who tune into the pilot on Wednesday, August 24 at 10pm will be able to see places they might recognise in Consett and County Durham.
Jesmond casting agent Camilla Fox, who runs Fox Casting Agency, worked as a location manager on the show scouting the best places to film in the town. Dubbing the show as the "next Gavin and Stacey or Hebburn," Camilla said the pilot was shot in January and February this year and features locations ranging from the local pub to people's homes.
"It was really nice to film in Consett, there is a really nice feel up there," Camilla said.
"Everyone was very welcoming. We used Consett Rugby Club and Consett Methodist Church as a base.
"All of the locations were local to Consett apart from one which was a card shop called 'Card Trix' in Stanley. We filmed in the Grey Horse pub and local houses, as well as streets including The Avenue and Robson Street."
She continued: "The show is really good fun. I think the script is really funny and I think people will enjoy it. It gives a flavour of the North East and that [northern] sense of humour."
Executive producer Fraser Ayres from TriForce Productions, which produced Dead Canny, said Consett was a brilliant place to film the pilot.
"[Over] the past year we have supported Anna Costello and worked with her on the script," Fraser said.
"She was just amazing throughout the whole process. She is going to be a huge name in our industry and it’s been wonderful being part of her journey.
"It was important for us that we didn’t just ‘drop-in’ to Consett and so worked closely with Anna and made sure we hired locally and utilised the incredible warmth and skills of those in the area. Not only that, we received such a warm reception and open arms from everybody in Consett. Honestly, it wouldn’t be the great show that it is without their support!"
