The Genshin Impact 4.0 map had expanded to include the first part of Fontaine, but there’s an unmistakable gap that’s sparking fan theories. Some of it will undoubtedly include more of the Fontaine region itself, as HoYoverse usually doesn’t release a region in its entirety, but the hole stretches from Mondstadt to Sumeru and even Liyue.
Even leakers say Fontaine isn’t that big, and despite some people saying Celestia might be there, the realm of the gods is meant to be in the sky. That sill leaves a lot of land to fill in.
There’s a few prominent theories at present. One is that we’ll finally see the Dandelion Sea and the northern port of Mondstadt, a location that’s long been rumored to feature in upcoming events, but has yet to materialize. It’s meant to be somewhere further north and a long way from Mondstadt City, on a trade route that links Mondstadt to Liyue and Port Ormos. The geography is a bit shaky there, admittedly.
This big empty space looks realllllly weird.

Liyue’s Chenyu Vale is also still missing, a region the Adepti mentioned in previous patches that we’ve never visited yet. There’s meant to be a port nearby, and it lies somewhere between Sumeru and Fontaine, so this seems like a pretty reasonable idea.
The third, and equally likely, suggestion is Bayda Harbor, another Sumeru port that lies just opposite Fontaine. Some early leaks suggest more Liyue and Sumeru characters are planned for later in the 4.0 series of patches, following the initial round of Fontaine characters, and if so, we may end up seeing these locations appear then.
The final and most popular idea was the joke that it’s just an excuse to add more desert, a nod to the massive region west of Sumeru that only kept getting bigger during the 3.0 updates.
