From the moment General Hospital’s Brennan (Charles Mesure) told Carly (Laura Wright) that John Cates (Adam J. Harrington) and the FBI would likely never let go of Jason (Steve Burton) as an informant, she’s found herself haunted by the WSB agent's words. To be honest, we too have been haunted by his words, as it’s starting to look as if Brennan was right.
In the General Hospital episode airing on July 17, Jason passed along to John the special phone Valentin (James Patrick Stuart) had been using to communicate Pikeman business. John wasn’t pleased Jason didn’t hand over the device sooner, but Jason reminded John he approached him going on a rant about how evil Sonny (Maurice Benard) is. John quickly called a team to meet him at Valentin’s home to conduct a raid, but by the time John and crew arrived, Valentin had already left thanks to Anna’s (Finola Hughes) tip.
While we can’t help but chuckle at the egg on John’s face, as he’s been rather duplicitous and irksome since arriving in Port Charles, we’re concerned about what Valentin's escaping will mean for Jason.
John has already been pressing Jason for information on Sonny, wanting intel that could put the kingpin behind bars. Now that it looks as if John won’t capture his real prize, the head of Pikeman, he may be more determined to build a case against Sonny to save face with his superiors. The powers that be in the FBI have not exactly been thrilled with John’s investigation into Pikeman, so Sonny could be another big fish to catch.
We can imagine that a furious John finds Jason and demands Stone Cold shares everything he knows about Sonny, or else John will make sure Carly is arrested and put on trial for running the Corinthos organization in Sonny’s absence. John would probably remind Jason the FBI has the audio confession, and Jason would find himself in the toughest spot in his life. Having to choose between the love of his life in Carly and his former bestie/business partner in Sonny.
Knowing all the sacrifices Jason has already made for her and again recalling the words from Brennan, we think Carly will take matters into her own hands. She’s been rather good about listening to Jason and not taking any action so far on this, but we don’t think her sitting idly by is meant to last.
Diane (Carolyn Hennesy) has already informed Carly that she could turn herself in to the authorities and hope she prevails in court, but Diane warned her chances of winning the case are about 30% give or take. Brennan also suggested that Carly could take the matter to the court of public opinion and paint herself as a doting mother and cry about government overreach. However, Brennan also mentioned that could backfire.
That leaves us to think Carly may do something that could really spell trouble. Brennan also noted that the recording of Carly is likely on the FBI’s protected server, and if it disappears, so does the case against her.
Now Carly herself doesn’t possess the skills to get that audio, but she knows Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) and Brick (Stephen A. Smith) are more than capable hackers. So could she lean on one of them for help? Since we like to applaud Carly’s growth these days, we hope she won’t be as inclined to ask Spinelli for this kind of assistance, as it could result in jail time if they’re caught, and he has a family with Maxie (Kristen Storms).
Perhaps Carly bypasses Spinelli and Brick altogether, and she goes to Sonny and confesses everything that’s been going on with John, Jason and the audio. Sonny would probably feel guilty that Carly found herself in such a compromising position due to his disappearance, and he may be more than happy to use his resources to see if he can get the audio clip for his ex. However, by telling Sonny the truth with him being increasingly violent now that he’s not on the correct bipolar meds thanks to Ava (Maura West), Carly runs the risk that Sonny will try to kill John, who is still an FBI agent.
We can’t be sure what the future holds for John, Jason and Carly with the Pikeman investigation crumbling, but we sense drama is on the horizon.
