Actress Sonya Eddy’s cause of death has been revealed after she unexpectedly passed away earlier this week.
The General Hospital actress, sadly died at age 55 after experiencing complications from a non-emergency surgical operation.
Close friend Tyler Ford told TMZ that the pre-scheduled procedure was set for December 9, and that Sonya was released from the hospital in Burbank, California, on December 11.
It was only a few days before the soap star began to feel unwell and was readmitted to hospital on December 15.
At that point, doctors discovered she had developed an infection that was uncontainable.
On the following Monday morning, the 19th, Eddy was placed on life support, but died later that night.
The actress Octavia Spencer was the first person to share the news of Eddy’s passing with the public.
The Hidden Figures star took to Instagram to share a photo of Eddy, writing the caption: “My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. Her legions of @generalhospitalabc fans will miss her.
“My thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones, friends, and fans!”
Speaking to Page Six, ABC released the following statement: “‘General Hospital’ is sad to confirm the passing of actress Sonya Eddy, who embodied her character … the tough but compassionate, head nurse, Epiphany Johnson … and immediately became a fan favorite and beloved member of our ‘GH’ family when she joined the show in 2006.”
Executive producer of the show, Frank Valentini, published his own statement, writing that he was “heartbroken about the loss of the incredible Sonya Eddy,” and that he loved her as a friend.
He said: “The lights in the hub of the nurses’ station will now be a little dimmer, but her spirit and light will live on in both the show and our set.
“On behalf of the entire ‘GH’ cast and crew, we send our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and fans. She will be very missed.”
Eddy starred as Epiphany Jonson on General Hospital since 2006, while also taking part in the spinoff show, General Hospital: Night Shift. She has starred in over 500 episodes of the TV soap.
She also appeared in television programs and films such as Seinfeld, Patch Adams, Reba, Monk, Joan of Arcadia, CSI, Glee, Castle and Fresh Off The Boat.
