Gemma Collins opens up on mental health battle as she speaks out on new treatment

TOWIE star Gemma Collins has turned to a new treatment to boost her mental health.

The reality TV icon revealed she's also come off medication for depression following the treatment and described herself as now feeling "calm".

The bubbly TV star, who has been a regular on TOWIE as well as having her own spin off reality series, opened up in an interview whilst at the Chelsea Flower Show.

The 42-year-old spoke about her experience of depression and mental health, which she's struggled with at various points in her life, as well as revealing she's turned to a neuroscience treatment to aid her and bring her off medication.

Speaking to OK! magazine, Gemma said: "I’ve suffered from depression at various times in my life but I’m off all medication now. I felt like my judgment was really clouded when I was taking it and I couldn’t feel anything.

"I’m very big on spirituality and following my own intuition and I felt that when I was on the tablets, it just numbed it. I was too manic before and that’s why I had to go on the tablets – because you can’t cope with the level of pressure – but now I’m off my tablets. I’m so calm."

She added: "First I was on [antidepressant] Citalopram and then I went onto Sertraline and it got me through a sticky period, and then literally, I was just like, “I can’t feel anything any more” so I came off of it.

"I was told about the Flow Neuroscience Headset and it’s incredible – the NHS is really keen to have it. I do it in the morning when I’m making a cup of tea. It’s a head device programmed to an app on your phone and it stimulates the frontal area of the brain linked to depression."

Gemma added that she feels "sharp" and "has got all her feelings back" following the depression treatment, as she revealed she's also been enjoying gardening for her mental health too.

As her mental health improves, Gemma is also reported to be eyeing up a move from Essex to London's Knightsbridge and also considering a career move into acting.

The former TOWIE star is likely to tread the boards later this year as Jenny in eerie West End play 2:22 A Ghost Story a role also previously played by Cheryl Tweedy, Lily Allen, Giovanna Fletcher and Laura Whitmore.

A source said: “Gemma wants the challenge of acting to move her career forward. She likes the idea of this role as it is gritty, and not what anyone would expect her to do next. It’d be an incredible opportunity.”
