Gemini can easily create Google Docs, PDF and other files in seconds — here's how it works

Gemini has seen a wave of meaningful updates in recent months.

The music AI generator known as Lyria 3 was integrated into Gemini, NotebookLM updates within the app have made it even easier for users to generate on-the-go, plus Gemini Notebooks launched for even more organization and productivity.

Gemini has also become a native macOS experience that can be activated right from your desktop/laptop without a browser.

Now, another worthwhile update has expanded Gemini’s productivity capabilities even further, allowing it to easily generate all sorts of files. Here’s how that process works.

Uploading, prompting and creating documents

Gemini is now capable of creating downloadable and easily shared files based on the prompts you send out that are connected to the documents you upload.

So, for example, you can attach a document with all of your handwritten lecture notes and ask Gemini to turn all of them into a bulleted list document. Some of the other uses of this new Gemini feature come straight from an official Google blog post, such as attaching your company’s budget proposal and asking Gemini to quickly transform it into a Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) file.

Once that Gemini-generated file is complete, you can then download it directly from the chatbot to your device or export it to your Google Drive.

An example prompt that Google says can be of great use is as follows: Create an in-depth study guide as a PDF in LaTeX format using my lecture notes. Include visuals, graphs, and equations.

The full list of supported formats that Gemini can generate at your command can be found below:

  • Google Workspace files (Docs, Sheets and Slides)
  • .pdf
  • .docx
  • .xlsx
  • .csv
  • LaTeX
  • Plain Text (TXT)
  • Rich Text Format (RTF)
  • Markdown (MD)

This new Gemini file-generating feature is now available for all global users.

Bottom line

Google’s core AI tool continues to impress with useful new features. The ability to create files in seconds is another step toward making Gemini a more essential tool compared to its competitors.
