Using gel nail polish can leave people with lifelong after-effects if it triggers allergies, dermatologists have warned. The increasing popularity of at-home gel manicures is said to be putting more individuals at risk of experiencing dangerous reactions.
Gel products contain chemicals known as methacrylates. If someone reacts badly to these substances, they could be stopped from undergoing routine procedures like cataracts, joint replacement or dental work in future.
Dermatologists say people should only get manicures from a fully-trained professional, as poorly skilled technicians can also be the culprit if someone has a bad reaction, The Mirror reports. Methacrylate can enter the skin when the ultraviolet lamp used to harden the layers of nail polish is not used for long enough, or the equipment is substandard.
