Residents in a Nottinghamshire village have complained of sewage spilling onto a main road, saying it makes them "think of medieval times". Foul smells and "mushed-up" toilet paper have been reported in Westdale Lane near its junction with Main Road, Gedling.
Severn Trent Water said a team had been to the site and was working "as quickly as possible" to stop the sewage flooding, which has been caused by a blockage. Chris Cann, a retired library worker who lives in nearby Vernon Avenue, said the sight and smell of the sewage on the pavement was "totally disgusting".
"I couldn't believe it when I saw it," she said. "There's raw sewage, people have seen mushed-up toilet paper coming out of the drain.

"It flows out of the drain and along the pavement. It smells pretty bad but some kids might not realise and walk through it thinking it's just water. Dogs could walk through it and walk it into people's homes."
Ms Cann said the flooding had been present for weeks, however Severn Trent say they were first contacted about the problem on Friday, June 23. "It's totally disgusting, it makes you think of medieval times with people throwing their muck in the street," continued Ms Cann.
"It shouldn't be happening for one day. It's sickening and it's really detrimental to the area. Sometimes it even runs down into the main road.
"I've been careful not to walk in it but not everyone can avoid it, some people are in wheelchairs and others can't jump over it."
Ian Smith, Waste Team Manager at Severn Trent, said: “We’re sorry to hear about the sewage flooding on Westdale Lane in Gedling as we know that any form of flooding can be distressing. Our team has been out to the site today (Tuesday, June 27) and has identified a blockage that the team are working to clear as quickly as possible."
