Gedling Access Road key update reached as opening expected soon

Nottinghamshire County Council has provided an update on the progress of the Gedling Access Road.

Construction of the new £40m 3.8km route began in January 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by Spring this year, after delays and soaring costs.

More roadworks are planned at locations such as around Victoria Retail Park and the mini roundabout on Arnold Lane.

It had initially been said the road would be completed by Autumn 2021, but delays due to the coronavirus pandemic as well as other logistical issues led to the date being pushed back.

The county council says the final road surface has been put down along the entire length of the new road.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire County Council said: "Over the last few weeks, another milestone has been reached as the final highways surface was put down along the length of the new road.

"Construction teams have also now planted over 35,000 trees across the site, which is two thirds of the planned total, including 250 larger trees and smaller whips."

A council spokesperson continued: "Changes to road marking destinations are being done this week on the A612 around the Victoria Retail Park, and to minimise disruption in the area, there will be lane closures in place over night for the next four nights.

On Monday, March 7, three-way traffic lights will be in place at the mini-roundabout on Arnold Lane/Shearing Hill.

"These lights will be in place to allow construction teams to install new signage on Main Road. These temporary signals will be removed as soon as works are complete.

"Other signage is being installed around the village with most of these works taking place within the footway, meaning that there should be no impact on traffic. These signs are the new Environmental Weight Limit signs which will be bagged over until the GAR is open to traffic."

Between Mapperley Plains and Lambley Lane, work to install environmental barriers is now complete, as is the installation of the vehicle restraint system barriers and boundary fencing.

The installation of road signs has continued, and construction teams have also continued to topsoil verge areas and lay surfacing along the footway section.

The council has stated that the closure of a section of Mapperley Plains in February was successful and allowed their construction teams to remove the old layer of road surface and add a new one to tie the existing carriageway with the new junction for GAR.

The authority has thanked residents and motorists for their patience whilst these works took place.
