Gears of War 6 could debut at big Xbox event in June

Xbox is set to host a massive gaming event in June where it could reveal Gears of War 6 alongside an upgraded Xbox Series X console.

More than four years have passed since the last entry in the humans versus mutants saga, Gears 5, with no official word on the fate of the popular series.

Well, that could be about to change as Xbox is expected to announce Gears 6 this summer, according to two industry insiders.

Speaking on the Kinda Funny Xcast podcast, Parris Lilly suggested that the game could be teased at the upcoming Xbox Gaming Showcase in June, and launch alongside the next Xbox console this winter.

Later in the same show, his prediction was corroborated by Jeff Grubb, who said: "I’ve heard some stuff may be happening with Gears 6 this summer. I think a tease sounds about right to me, Parris, that seems like what we can expect."

Grubb, who has a proven track record with leaks, has previously revealed info about a string of blockbusters including Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Mass Effect, and Elden Ring.

Gears of War tells the brutal story of survival in the violent world of Sera, where a ragtag squadron faces off against a subterranean race of beasties, known as the Locust Horde, in an existential war.

The series was led by gruff soldiers Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago before shifting to focus on Kat Diaz in Gears 5, a new recruit who sets out to discover the origins of the monsters.

Microsoft said Gears 5 drew in over 3 million players in its opening weekend. This was the biggest launch week for any Xbox Game Studios title of the previous generation, and doubled the launch of Gears of War 4. The entire Gears series is currently available on Xbox’s subscription service Game Pass, including the spinoff Gears Tactics.

Earlier this year, Xbox confirmed that it will hold a gaming Showcase event in June 2024, where we could see more of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and fantasy RPG Avowed. It also mentioned new “console and controller options” for the holiday period between the end of November and New Year’s Day.

Although Microsoft has yet to announce new Xbox hardware, leaked documents published last year revealed that it had planned to launch digital-only console refreshes for both the Xbox Series X and S this year. Meanwhile, it’s also been reported that Microsoft is working on an Xbox handheld console.

What better way to kick off a new set of gaming gadgets than with a brand new Gears game?
