Gaza hospitals under siege, urgently need medical supplies

Around 350 people have been killed in the intense fighting in Gaza.

Hospitals in southern Gaza are reportedly facing dire conditions as intense fighting continues in the area. The Palestine Red Crescent Society has raised concerns about the siege on these hospitals, stating that Nasser Hospital, the main medical center in southern Gaza, is running out of critical supplies such as blood, anesthesia, and medications. The Hamas-run Ministry of Health has reported that 350 people have been killed in the region over the weekend.

In addition to the ongoing violence, the region has also been hit by heavy rainfall, further exacerbating the situation for the hundreds of thousands of families who have been displaced. Many of these families, who fled their homes with little to no belongings, are now faced with the destruction caused by the rains. Toddlers are seen walking around in knee-deep water without shoes, and there is a serious concern for the outbreak of diseases in these unsanitary conditions.

The emergency communications specialist for UNICEF, Joe English, has expressed deep concerns about the escalating situation in Gaza. He emphasizes that the priority should be to establish a ceasefire to ensure the safety and security of children and families. English highlights that parents in Gaza are no different from those in other areas, as they simply want to provide a secure environment for their children.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing conflict, there is nowhere safe for these families to seek refuge. Many have fled to the south, specifically to Rafa, where over one million people are now residing in abhorrent conditions. English urges an end to the fighting, emphasizing that it is crucial to put an end to the strikes and bombardment so that humanitarian aid can be effectively delivered.

While organizations like UNICEF are doing their best to reach and support children and families in need, English stresses that the level of support required cannot be achieved without a cessation of hostilities. The situation in Gaza is dire, and urgent action is needed to provide the necessary assistance and protection for these vulnerable populations.

The international community is called upon to take immediate steps to facilitate a ceasefire and to address the urgent humanitarian needs of the people in Gaza. Without a swift and coordinated response, the already grave situation in southern Gaza will continue to worsen, further jeopardizing the lives and well-being of children and families.
