Gavin & Stacey was one of the most-loved British sitcoms after it followed a sweet long distance relationship between Essex boy Gavin and his Welsh sweetheart Stacey.
In 2019, Ruth Jones and James Corden treated fans to a one off Christmas Special which left viewers wanting more with a cliffhanger ending to Smithy and Nessa's on/off romance.
Almost a decade after the final episode of the show, the Christmas instalment saw Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page) reunite in Barry for the festive season.
The hilarious Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) was up to his usual tricks, and Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) left fans wondering if Smithy said "yes" to her proposal.
As well as Smithy and Nessa, fans were also left wondering if they will ever get to the bottom of what actually happened on that fishing trip.
The special, which aired on BBC One on Christmas Day drew in more than 18 million viewers.
A rumour that the show was coming back was sparked after Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman, who played Gavin's parents, were seen filming in Wales.
The couple were seen relaxing in deck chairs, sipping hot drinks from their mugs as they enjoyed the views.
But sadly, this wasn't for a new series, they were filming an advert for Barrybados, which sells Gavin and Stacey paraphernalia.
"It was astonishing when it actually happened, but in a funny old way it wasn't that surprising. Everyone knew as soon as they read it that this was gonna be a stormer," said Larry Lamb, who played Mick Shipman, told Essex Live.
"When a script comes out it's a follow up to something that's already been successful, there's always a chance that it could not quite be as good.
"But this we knew right from the point that we read it. We thought 'well, if this goes out the right way at the right time, then this is gonna be a record breaker'. [It was] extraordinary," he continued.
He also recently revealed that he's on board for another special, but added that it didn't look like it would happen for a while.
"As to whether there will be another one; it takes such a long time to get it all together. It takes them about a year to write it, to get it pushed through the system to where that's the finished item, and then to gather everybody together to do it. There certainly won't be a Christmas special this year, that's for sure."
When he was quizzed about the huge cliffhanger which saw Nessa get down on one knee, he said: "I have no idea what the resolution is because it's not been written."
James chatted about the show on BBC Radio 2 earlier this year, where he said that the future of the programme was in Ruth's hands.

“I wish I could say it’s up to me,” he said, adding: “She’ll know when it’s right and together we’ll figure it out. If that ever happens. But I do think it’s a big ‘if’, I don’t think it’s a ‘when’.”
But hopes were dashed after Ruth told The Independent: "It's not coming back."
“I’m really hugely complimented that people love [the show] so much,” she added. “But it is quite an extraordinary thing… It’s almost like you mention the words Gavin & Stacey and people assume it’s back… But it’s not.”
