Ruth Jones has seemingly hinted what Smithy said to Nessa after she proposed to him in Gavin and Stacey.
Fans of the popular BBC comedy were stunned when Nessa - played by Ruth - dropped to one knee at the end of the Christmas special in 2019 and asked Smithy to marry her. However, the episode ended without revealing his answer.
Ruth appeared on ITV's Lorraine today where she appeared to hint what Smithy's response was. Fans have been desperate to know if Nessa and Smithy did decide to get engaged and what that would mean for the future of the show.
Speaking on the ITV show, she joked about the possibility, sharing: "As times go by, you would have thought if Nessa and Smithy were gonna get married, they'd have got married - probably divorced - by now.
"It was quite funny though because a lot of people ask me what did Smithy say and I say, well I don't know but they couldn't have got married. If they had, they'd of got married now. And they're like, no because of Covid, so many people put their weddings hold, so it would be feasible for them to marry three years later. They're writing the script for us."
It comes after Ruth admitted it was unlikely that Gavin & Stacey would ever return to our screens.
When asked whether the show will come back, Ruth insisted: "It's not coming back."
She added: "I'm really hugely complimented that people love it so much. But it is quite an extraordinary thing...it's almost like you mention the words Gavin and Stacey and people assume it's back."
However, Ruth revealed she was 'sure' she and co-writer James Corden would work together again, as she added to The Independent : "I'm sure, at some point, James and I will write something together. But it won't be Gavin & Stacey. Certainly, when he's back in the UK, I would have thought we would try and get together and write again because it was such fun to do that."
Earlier this year, James - who played Smithy - was asked about the possibility of the show returning.
"Gavin & Stacey – is it the end or are you sitting down writing or is the story going to continue? What’s going on in your head?" host Vernon asked, with James replying: "I wish I could say it’s up to me. The best thing about Gavin & Stacey is that it’s Ruth and I and, if I’m being completely honest, her judgement is exceptional.
"So, look I am going to have a bit more free time as of sort of next year and that will open some time for us to just be together I hope, but honestly, and I’m so touched every time I get here when people ask about it. It’s amazing, it's incredible how people care about those characters in the show. It’s so great and I realise the ending of that special does very definitely tease something else."
