'Gave their reasons' - Graeme Souness reveals honest discussion that led to Sky Sports exit

Liverpool great Graeme Souness has confirmed his sudden departure from Sky Sports was 'mutual' as he remains hopeful about returning to the TV studio in due course.

Souness, 70, appeared on the broadcaster for the final time last season after close to two decades working there. His achievements on-field at Anfield and beyond need no explanation.

In his second career, the Scot was a regular feature on flagship shows hosted by Sky Sports, while his break from television has moved him into some inspirational charity work. However, the former Liverpool player and manager admits he could step back into broadcasting.

Taking a break from training for an impending cross-Channel swim to raise money for research into epidermolysis bullosa, the ex-Rangers, Galatasaray and Newcastle manager opened the door to further broadcasting work in the future, while shedding further light on his exit from Sky Sports.

Speaking to The Guardian in a wide-ranging interview, Souness said: "[It was a] Mutual decision. I mean, I was keen to stay another year.

"They thought it would be a good idea that we called it a day - gave their reasons - and I accepted it and have zero complaints about Sky. I worked for them maybe 15 years solid, but it's more like 20 years. They've been great for me, gave me the weekends to look forward to, the buzz of live football.

"Yes [he will miss it], but I'm talking to other people and we'll go again. There's life in the old dog yet."

Addressing his Sky Sports departure, initially, in an emotional on-screen farewell, Souness added: "I was given an opportunity to do this and it was magnificent. It has just been the most fantastic time for me. I love football and l care about football and I worry about it going forward, but Sky Sports are in good hands."
