Gateshead yob banned from contacting mum turned up at family barbecue and smashed windows

A man who was banned from being around his own mother breached a restraining order after putting through one of her windows.

Peter Jobling had been the subject of a restraining since April 2020 which banned him from contacting his own mother and her disabled partner. However, he had gone on to breach the order on a number of occasions since then - most recently on May 29 this year.

The 27-year-old turned up to a barbecue that his mum was hosting at her home and demanded to use the toilet. But when he was told to leave, Jobling put one of her windows through with a brick.

On Friday, Jobling, of Keats Walk, Gateshead, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court to be sentenced for three counts of breaching a restraining order and one count of criminal damage. He had pleaded guilty to the offences.

The court heard that on April 7 2020, Jobling was made subject of a restraining order which barred him from contacting his mum and her partner. But in May, he turned up to her home unannounced.

Kevin Wardlaw, prosecuting, said: "They were having a barbecue in the front garden and the defendant came into the street and asked his mum, 'can I use your f****** toilet?'. It was pointed out to him that he shouldn't be there and he walked to the rear of the property.

"His mum then heard him hitting a brick through the window resulting in £200 damage. He then told witnesses 'I'll smash your window and put the rest in as well'."

In a statement, Jobling's mother said his actions left her "struggling to sleep" and is "anxious in my own home".

Jobling had 20 previous convictions for 40 offences, including eight previous convictions for 11 court order breaches which involved his mum and her partner - who has a disability.

Fiona Lamb, defending, said: "He tells me he is very sorry and that it won't happen again and that deep down he loves her to bits and would never hurt her. He knows she doesn't want anything to do with him.

"He repeatedly said he loves his mum and understands she just wants to be left alone. There is remorse in this case."

Judge Sarah Mallett jailed Jobling for 21 months. The restraining order remains in place.
