Gas station outages are on the rise in Florida metro areas most affected by Hurricane Milton, as reported by GasBuddy, a platform that monitors gas prices and availability.
In the Tampa-St. Petersburg region, a staggering 59.2% of gas stations were found to be without gas as of 9:36 a.m. ET on Wednesday, according to GasBuddy's data.
Similarly, in Sarasota, 39.1% of gas stations and in Fort Myers/Naples, 35.2% were also experiencing fuel shortages, as per GasBuddy's findings. Other areas facing notable outages include Gainesville at 31.8% and Orlando/Daytona Beach at 26.6%.
Statewide, GasBuddy reported that 23% of gas stations in Florida were without fuel.
It's important to note that many Floridians evacuating the affected areas are heading north, refueling along the way. Those opting to stay put during the severe weather are also flocking to gas stations, stocking up on fuel to power generators in case of prolonged power outages.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis reassured the public that the state has an ample fuel supply, with 1.1 million gallons of gasoline readily available.
DeSantis emphasized, 'There is currently no fuel shortage. However, the demand has been exceptionally high, leading to some gas stations running out of fuel.' This statement was made during a press conference on Wednesday morning.
