Gary Oldman, who played Sirius Black in the ‘Harry Potter’ movies, says the HBO series will be ‘more satisfying’ to fans for one key reason

The upcoming HBO series adaptation of Harry Potter is set to offer a “more satisfying” experience for fans because it will likely follow the source material word-for-word, according to Gary Oldman. Oldman, who famously portrayed Sirius Black in the film franchise, recently shared his thoughts in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on why this transition to television provides a significant advantage over the movies.

Oldman explained that the original films were forced to cut a massive amount of material just to keep the runtimes manageable. Even with those cuts, the movies still reached lengths of around three hours. By shifting to a series format, the production team has the space to include the character details that were previously sacrificed on the cutting room floor.

The actor, who first joined the franchise in 2004 with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, expressed deep gratitude for his time in the Wizarding World. He described the film series as a “phenomenon” that we “probably will not see the likes of again.”

Oldman also made sure to give credit to director Chris Columbus

He noted that Columbus deserves more recognition for setting up the world and handling the initial casting process so effectively. According to Oldman, the production was lucky to have a cast that returned repeatedly and literally grew into their roles over the years.

Oldman’s own journey in the films spanned several years. After his introduction as the mysterious godfather, he returned for a cameo in 2005 for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He appeared again in 2007 for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and his final turn as Sirius Black was a cameo in 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2.

You can expect the new series to debut in Christmas 2026 on HBO, and it will also stream on HBO Max. The project features a fresh cast stepping into these iconic roles. Dominic McLaughlin is taking on the title role of Harry Potter, joined by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult cast is equally impressive, with John Lithgow set to play Albus Dumbledore and Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall. You will also see Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

The supporting cast is rounded out by Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick. Other familiar students include Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, and the Weasley twins played by Tristan and Gabriel Harland. The cast also features Ruari Spooner, Alessia Leoni, Sienna Moosah, Finn Stephens, William Nash, and Sirine Saba.

The story remains the same classic tale we know, beginning with the reveal that Harry Potter’s life is far from ordinary. After receiving his mysterious letter of admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he discovers a hidden world of magic.
