Gary Neville to miss Monday Night Football as Jamie Carragher says he's "cried off"

Gary Neville will not feature in Sky Sports' Monday Night Football coverage of Brentford's clash with Fulham as fellow pundit Jamie Carragher claimed his colleague has "cried off".

Former Manchester United right-back Neville endured a miserable Sunday afternoon as he was on co-commentary duty for one of the most humiliating performances in recent Red Devils history. Erik ten Hag's side were brutally beaten 7-0 by rivals Liverpool at Anfield, marking United's heaviest defeat of the Premier League era.

The fact that Neville was sat alongside ex-Liverpool defender Carragher for the entirety of the game meant the former was subject to some light taunting once the Reds had run away with the game.

Less than 24 hours later, Carragher took to Twitter with a series of laughing-crying emojis while writing: "Gary Neville has cried off from MNF. What analysis do you want most". His tweet allowed followers to vote on which bits of the weekend's action they would like the pundit to pick over.

Neville's apparent absence from the programme means he won't get the chance to elaborate on his thoughts surrounding the dismal display from United on Sunday.

That's not to suggest he hadn't made how he felt clear at the time, with Neville opting to label the 7-0 scoreline a "freak" result and suggesting Liverpool didn't actually play that well. The latter claim didn't sit well with fellow pundit Graeme Souness, who labelled it a "daft remark".

HAVE YOUR SAY! Was Man Utd's 7-0 defeat at Liverpool a freak result? Comment below.

"It was [a freak result]. It was a disgraceful result, but it’s been out of character for this manager and this group of players over the last few months," Neville claimed.

After Roy Keane explained how this group of United players won't win the league, Neville started another passionate defence of how they have fared so far this season.

"They won’t," he conceded. "Erik ten Hag needs another couple of transfer windows, he needs other investment. What he’s getting out of the players in this squad, we’d written most of the players off. [Marcus] Rashford, [Diogo] Dalot, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, [Luke] Shaw, [Raphael] Varane, Fred, [Scott] McTominay, they’re all still playing, those players, and he’s achieving unbelievable things with them.

"I’ve got faith with what he’s doing at this moment in time and he deserves a little bit more backing than what he’s got today. That second half, that is out of character for what we’ve seen in the last few months.

"They’ve lost one game in the last 25, that is out of character. That is not the norm for the players out there today - they’ve improved enormously."

Neville's defence of United will not continue into Monday night if Carragher's claims surrounding the United legend's absence are correct.
