Gary Neville thinks Manchester United players won't react to obvious motivation for Liverpool fixture

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has issued a damning verdict on the club's current players ahead of their clash with fierce rivals Liverpool.

They visit Anfield on Tuesday night with the nightmare of their October mauling at the forefront of many memories, and the Reds have struggled to clamber out of the depths since whilst Liverpool have continued to go from strength to strength. Neville, who was a serial winner at the Theatre of Dreams during his playing days, believes the current crop of players "want the season to end."

He told Sky Sports: "I'm trying to think of whether these players would react to a motivation around protecting a historic treble or Manchester United are on 20 titles and Liverpool are on 19, to me that's really important that you remain a club that's won the most titles. I don't think these players will react to that.

"I wouldn't say that (they don't care enough) I very rarely level that at players because most of these players I watched last season and was quite complimentary about them. What I would say is I've not seen a group of Manchester United players that's lacking in appetite to want to play football for the club at a particular moment... in fact ever.

"They look like they desperately want the season to end and they don't want to be here at this moment in time, it's not that don't care, I think they just want a fresh start, put this season behind them. I don't know where the performance comes from tonight.

"In normal times, you'd say Manchester United are a dangerous opponent for Liverpool but that would be in normal times, this is an abnormal Liverpool team in the sense of how good they are and how consistent they've been over a long period of time. This is a Manchester United team, that to be fair, that Manchester United fans including myself have very little faith in."
