Gary Neville speaks out on 'unpleasant' incident after Man Utd third goal vs Nottingham Forest

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville spoke out on a worrying incident in the aftermath of Manchester United’s third goal vs Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup semi-final.

The Reds find themselves with a mountain to climb at Old Trafford in next week’s second leg. Goals from Marcus Rashford, Wout Weghorst and Bruno Fernandes gave Man United a 3-0 advantage at the halfway point.

Rashford’s goal came in just the sixth minute of the game, with Forest criticised for their defending of the situation by both Neville and former midfielder Roy Keane. Weghorst then doubled United’s lead just before half-time when he pounced on a rebound from a Wayne Hennessey save.

Fernandes put the result on the night beyond doubt with just a few minutes left to play when he found the back of the net after being put through one-on-one with Hennessey. That goal prompted big celebrations in the away end of the City Ground.

As the away fans rushed to celebrate with the players, TV pictures showed an advertising hoarding fall over, causing a small surge of people towards the pitch. There doesn’t appear to be any injuries or fallout from the incident, but Neville said that it was an uncomfortable thing to see.

“It was an unpleasant watch that for a moment or two,” he said on co-commentary of the game. “But it looks like everybody’s okay over in that corner. They’re putting the advertising board back.”

The result could have been different for Forest had Sam Surridge not had a first half equaliser ruled out for offside. The striker finished well past David De Gea, but celebrations were cut short by a VAR check which ruled the former Bournemouth man to be in an offside position when the ball was played by Morgan Gibbs-White.
