Gary Neville slams 'depressing' Manchester United and questions plan in top four race

Gary Neville has labelled Manchester United “depressing” in a damning reflection of their season after another poor showing against Leicester.

Having returned from the international break with the hunt for fourth in the Premier League still on, United failed to take advantage. Fred’s goal ensured they rescued a point after Kelechi Iheanacho opened the scoring at Old Trafford, but it could have been much worse.

It was a performance that summed up what has been a dismal season for the Reds. With eight games remaining, their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League threaten to tamely fizzle out.

For Neville, it was an all-too familiar sight during a thoroughly disappointing season. And the former United captain believes it’s not just the fans who can’t work out what the Reds’ plan is.

“It was a struggle. I was expecting Manchester United before the game to come and win, and put pressure on the teams that are going for that top four, Arsenal and Tottenham,” Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast.

“They’re way off it, absolutely way off it at this moment in time. We didn’t have an idea what they were going to do before the game, but the bigger worry was that the players didn’t have an idea what they were doing.

“That’s been the same all season. I think we’ve so fortunate this season with the amount of quality games we’ve seen, from top to bottom barring Norwich, every team you look at you think they know what they’re doing, they’re well organised, there’s no easy game, it’s a really tough Premier League.

“This Manchester United team, for what they’ve had spent on it, all season, they haven’t got a clear idea. You talk about philosophy, it’s a bit of a buzzword and has been for a number of years, but every team you watch has a clear idea of what they’re trying to do in possession and out of possession.

“Manchester United are not a pressing team, they’re actually depressing when you watch them out of possession because they just walk around. For about 20 minutes in that second half, up until Iheanacho scored that goal, they were walking around the pitch watching Leicester pass.

“Leicester deserved to win that game to be fair. Manchester United didn’t deserve a draw. They got one, which is a point, but I’m really disappointed, I have been all season, but there was further evidence of it.”
