Gary Neville's ruthless Man Utd verdict rings true after latest transfer setback

Antony is reportedly no longer interested in a move to Manchester United - just days after Gary Neville ruthlessly claimed that players would not want to join the club following their disastrous start to the season.

Erik ten Hag was keen to make Antony one of his marquee summer signings after the Brazilian winger dazzled in Ajax's title-winning team last term. It was thought that the 22-year-old was keen on following his old boss to Old Trafford, but it has now emerged that Antony is having second thoughts over a move.

That's according to De Telegraaf, who claim that the Ajax forward would now think twice about joining Manchester United in the wake of the club's horrific form.

Ten Hag has made the worst possible start to life in the Premier League, with United currently languishing at the bottom of the table after consecutive defeats to Brighton and Brentford - but the Dutchman's ability to improve United's fortunes has been severely handicapped by the club's shortcomings in the transfer market.

United have made just three signings this summer - and Neville warned his old side that they would struggle to convince other players to join the club after they were thrashed by Brentford on Saturday. He explained to Sky Sports: "That's the problem now. United in the past have always answered the fans' anger through money and spending in the transfer market.

"The problem is that no, no one wants to take their money. That's a massive issue. They can't spend the money. If you're a player watching that performance in the first half what are you thinking about coming to this club?"

Neville's harrowing verdict indicates that United could be in for even more transfer misery as Ten Hag desperately scours the market for last-gasp additions.

United have already been left frustrated in their bid to sign Frenkie de Jong, who is no closer to being convinced to switch to Old Trafford despite months of talks, while a deal to sign Adrien Rabiot has stalled over the Italian's excessive salary demands.

Ten Hag was also snubbed by Antony's Ajax teammate, Jurrien Timber, earlier in the summer after earmarking the 21-year-old centre-back as the ideal candidate to shore up United's fragile defence.

However, Timber reportedly knocked back interest from his old boss as he thought moving to United was too big of a risk - a stance that Neville now believes other potential targets will replicate.
