Gary Neville's apology after 'driving ban' for speeding

Gary Neville has issued an apology after revealing he will be banned from driving after speeding.

The former footballer took to Twitter on Saturday afternoon in response to a tweet by Paul Waugh, a journalist at The i newspaper regarding the Partygate fines, the MEN reports. In his reply, he revealed he was recently caught speeding and is "banned" from driving as he is "so sorry".

Following reports that Prime Minister Boris Johnson could receive three more fines over the partygate scandal, Mr Waugh quoted an ally of Mr Johnson who is reported to have given "NO10 defence". He tweeted: "If you’re caught speeding at 35mph four times, that doesn’t mean that you were speeding at 140mph. It doesn’t mean that you really endangered life because the cumulative effect of all your speeding in 30mph zones amounts to 140pmh, does it?"

In response, Gary Neville tweeted: "I can relate to this. Was recently caught speeding, around 35-40. For first time in 30 years I’m now over 12 points. So I am banned. Because that is the law. And when you break the law it means no excuses, no gaslighting, no lies! Speed kills and I’m so sorry!"

When asked if he was really banned, he responded he "will be" in the coming days or weeks. In 2017, Gary Neville was slammed by road safety campaigners for ‘putting lives at risk’ by holding a mobile phone at the wheel.

He was pictured with the phone in his hand on the M60 in Salford just days after the number of points and fine for calling or texting while driving doubled. Just months earlier, the former England international was pictured holding his phone at the wheel of his BMW in Manchester.
