Gary Neville demands Erik ten Hag makes brutal David de Gea call over Man Utd future

Gary Neville has called for Erik ten Hag to replace David de Gea as he insisted Manchester United would not win the title until they had a "world-class goalkeeper".

De Gea won the Premier League 's Golden Glove in the season just gone, but failed to convince Ten Hag he could be his permanent first-choice between the sticks. That has led to the Dutchman embarking on a recruitment drive for a new keeper this summer.

Inter Milan star Andre Onana is currently his top target, with De Gea increasingly appearing to be on his way out. United did offer De Gea fresh terms with a reduced wage put pulled that deal to put forward a further reduction in wages.

While some have criticised the way De Gea's exit has been handled, Neville does not appear to be too concerned if he departs. The legendary United skipper highlighted De Gea's performance in the FA Cup final as his reasoning for demanding an exit.

The Spaniard made a dreadful error, allow Ilkay Gundogan's shot to dribble past him for Manchester City's decisive second goal. And that has caused Neville to insist a new keeper is needed.

"I don't want to have a go at a goalkeeper who has been brilliant for Manchester United for the last ten years. He has had difficult moments and I didn't think he was good enough to be a Manchester United goalkeeper at the beginning," he told The Overlap Live.

"He was too slight, lacked the physicality. I gave him a lot of criticism. There was a period in the middle for four or five years where he was very good and performing at a high level. He was their best player when they were a poor team, but he still performed at a high level.

"Then in the last couple of years, he [Roy Keane] said it, you cannot let that goal in, the second one. Being Manchester United goalkeeper is the hardest position in English football. It brings the most scrutiny.

"I had two great keepers in Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar but in between that we lost four titles out of five. You have to have a world-class goalkeeper and United need to make that change now."

Keane has also frequently called for United to move De Gea on and was left unimpressed by his Golden Glove win. The Irishman insisted that the Spaniard has to be moved on if United are to progress.

"I’d move him on quickly. He wouldn’t be for me, he’s not going to get Manchester United back winning trophies, absolutely not. The idea that the players are patting him on the back is ridiculous, that’s his job," Keane said.

"You wouldn’t keep him as a No. 2. He wouldn’t want that, he wouldn’t stay for that. He’s done okay, he’s won a few Player of the Year awards – but what big deal is that? It’s about what the team is achieving.

“I think he’s made far too many mistakes over the years. He was trying to leave the club for a few years ago and go to Real Madrid.”
