Gary Neville couldn't help himself with Sky Sports jibe as Liverpool lifted Carabao Cup

Gary Neville claimed that watching Liverpool lift trophies is "not exactly why I joined Sky" after he witnessed their Carabao Cup success.

The Reds lifted the first piece of silverware of the season, seeing off Chelsea at Wembley on penalties.

It keeps alive their quadruple hopes and Neville, who spent his entire career at Manchester United, observed it all while on commentary duty.

He played in an era where the Red Devils were hugely successful, dominating English football whilst Liverpool were forced to watch on enviously.

The tide has now very much turned and it is the Reds who are in the ascendancy.

Neville watched on as Jurgen Klopp's men hoisted the Carabao Cup aloft and made his feelings known.

"This is not exactly why I joined Sky," he said. "To do Liverpool's trophy lifts."

Since United last lifted a trophy - the Europa League in 2017 - the Reds have won the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup and now the Carabao Cup.

They are still fighting on another three fronts this term, whilst the emphasis on the red half of Manchester is simply making the top four.

Neville had suggested that Liverpool may be enduring a bit of a dip this term, even placing United ahead of them in his pre-season predictions.

However he made a U-turn on that theory ahead of Sunday's final.

"Liverpool. I thought Liverpool were in decline. In decline from a very, very high place," he said.

"One of the best teams that you’ll see in Premier League a few years ago when they won it.

"But what I think they’ve done is dip off that level a little bit but now it feels like they’re coming back and they could have an incredible season this year.

"They could go on to win the Premier League, they’re still in the Champions League, they’ve obviously got a trophy to play for today - I think the winner of this trophy today will be in good stead for the rest of the season."

Neville was also at Old Trafford back in October when United lost 5-0 to Liverpool.

The humiliation furthered placed pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who was eventually sacked.

On that afternoon the Reds found themselves 4-0 ahead by half-time and Neville confessed: "I didn’t think it would ever get as bad as that today.

"Today that was an absolute shocker, and the timing couldn’t have been worse because it has been building now for a few weeks. As soon as they’ve played a proper team they’ve been obliterated, pulled to pieces, dismantled."
