Gary Lineker tweets heatwave warning over climate change fears

Temperatures are set to soar across the UK this week and in Nottinghamshire the mercury will hit 30C on Friday. But not everyone is celebrating by planning a BBQ and filling up the paddling pool in the weather.

Football pundit and TV star Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to remind followers that unusually high temperatures are no cause for celebration. The former England striker who now fronts Match of the Day on the BBC and BT Sport's UEFA Champions League coverage goes onto infers that ignoring the problem will ultimately have disastrous consequences.

In the tweet, which at the time of writing had attracted almost 17,000 likes since being posted at 9.07am today (June 16), Gary states: "Another heatwave over Europe and elsewhere. Records broken year on year. We’re like a cancer patient who knows there’s a tumour, but prefers to ignore it and hopes it goes away, even though it gets larger everyday #DontLookUp."

Don't Look Up, which Gary adds as a hashtag, refers to the Netflix movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio in which mankind ignores the warnings of an approaching comet set to destroy the planet until it's too late. However, some followers weren't too alarmed by the warning from Gary.

One tweeted: "It summer Gary. Worry when its 40 degrees in winter."

Another added: "Couple of sunny warm days and he thinks it's the end of the world."

Others had criticism for Gary himself, with one saying: "Are you going to lead by example and stop your foreign holiday helicopter excursions?" Another added: "Combat climate change by driving a 5litre v8."

But many on Twitter sympathised with the Match of the Day presenter's message. One said: "Everyone here who denies it, just give yourself 10 minutes to read about the greenhouse effect, the natural one and human influence on it. You don't need to read scientific papers on it, the basics are easy to understand."

Temperatures across Europe on Friday will hit 40C in parts of Spain and France, which is around 10C hotter than it usually is at this time of year. In Nottinghamshire, temperatures are set to cool down again on Saturday with the forecast currently showing a drop down to 17C and some much needed rain.
