Gary Lineker's son wins thousands with incredible seven-fold World Cup final bet

Gary Lineker's eldest son, George, banked thousands of pounds after winning a stunning seven-fold bet during Sunday's epic World Cup final.

Lionel Messi and Argentina lifted the coveted Jules Rimet trophy after beating defending champions France in an enthralling finale at the Lusail Stadium. Messi scored twice alongside Angel Di Maria, but France fought back through a sensational hat-trick from the irrepressible Kylian Mbappe.

Argentina, though, would not be denied: Emiliano Martinez produced some more spot-kick heroics to help inspire Lionel Scaloni's side to a 4-2 win shootout win to claim international football's richest prize.

But Argentina were far from the only ones to reap the rewards from their dramatic triumph in Qatar.

Lineker Jr revealed in a social media post that he had banked a tidy sum after building an intricate seven-fold bet for Sunday's seismic showdown.

Lineker correctly predicted that both Messi and Mbappe would score in the match and that the result at the end of the regulation 90 minutes would be 2-2. He also shrewdly backed Argentina to lift the trophy via a penalty shootout - giving him favourable odds.

Reacting on Twitter after the match, Lineker quipped to his followers: "If anyone deserves to win a bet, I think it’s me. Thank you all."

Sunday's showpiece final saw Messi finally land the one trophy that had managed to elude him for the majority of his illustrious career. Messi was a losing finalist back in 2014 and had been tipped to end the debate over whether or not he is the greatest player of his generation by winning the World Cup.

It has appeared at times throughtout the last month that he was not going to achieve such a feat - but the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner insisted after the match that he "knew" he was going to lift the World Cup in Qatar.

"It's crazy that it happened this way," Messi is quoted as saying by SPORT. "I wanted it very much. I knew that God was going to give it to me, I had a feeling that it was going to be this. Now to enjoy."

There had been plenty of speculation before the match that Messi could retire from international duty. The 35-year-old had already confirmed earlier in the tournament that he would not play in another World Cup.

But Messi promptly quashed talk that he was planning to walk away from the international fold for good though. "No, I'm not gonna retire from the national team," he told emphatically told TyC Sports. "I want to keep playing as World Cup champions with Argentina shirt."
