Gary Lineker's damning reply to Alan Hardy over Neymar's PSG penalty miss

Twitter is a wonderful social media site in how often it throws together things you'd never expect to see from celebrities saying to each other.

Football and Walkers crisps extraordinaire Gary Lineker is a keen tweeter and often gives his opinions on footballing stories (but he doesn't just stick to football despite being often told to).

And Lineker was at it again after Neymar's rather embarrassing penalty miss in PSG's loss to Nantes.

After kissing the ball, the Brazilian star took a bizarre run up and tamely passed his penalty to the centre right of the goal, providing an easy save for the keeper.

The clip has gone viral on social media and Gary Lineker jumped to defend the footballer, tweeting: "I know that feeling". A humble touch from one of England's greatest goal scorers.

Enter Alan Hardy - former Notts County owner.

Replying to Lineker, the Nottinghamshire businessman tweeted: "I don’t understand this ‘trying to out think the keeper’ stuff. Players like Neymar should be able to just run up and smash it in any corner he flippin’ likes".

A fair point, many would say.

But Lineker didn't seem to agree.

Replying to Hardy, he wrote: "Remind me of your penalty taking record?"

Fellow Twitter users seemed to side with Hardy in this instance, though, with one replying: "You don't need to be a chef to expect Gordon Ramsay to know how to knock up a decent cheese on toast."

Another wrote: "Bit harsh Gary, don't need to be an ex pro to see that penalty was absolutely horrendous."

And a third added: "Was an awful penalty, don't need to have been a pro to know that"

It's not the first time Lineker and Hardy have had a back and forth on Twitter.

Hardy accused television presenter Gary Lineker of 'Leicester bias" after he defended Kasper Schmeichel's recent comments over whether football is coming home.

The former England striker, 61, tweeted that Schmeichel had an argument in pointing out that England had never actually won the Euros before.

The comments were made ahead of England's crunch Euro 2020 semi-final against Denmark at Wembley.

Hardy, who owns the Nottinghamshire Golf & Country Club, replied that Lineker seemed to be backing the Leicester goalkeeper - the club he supports - and the presenter had the wrong idea of what "coming home" meant.

Both eventually agreed that the comments were "a bit of fun", but not before a back and forth took place on social media.
