Match of the Day host Gary Lineker says Joe Gelhardt's stoppage-time winner against Norwich City was 'huge' for the club as he reflected on a dramatic day in the Premier League relegation battle.
The Whites handed head coach Jesse Marsch his first win since he replaced Marcelo Bielsa earlier this month, but needed substitute Gelhardt to net a 94th-minute winner after the Canaries had equalised three minutes earlier through Kenny McLean.
Leeds took the initiative early, with Rodrigo netting the first goal of the Marsch era after 14 minutes, but were then guilty of spurning a series of chances, with Raphinha hitting the woodwork twice, Pascal Struijk missing from close range and Patrick Bamford, who returned to the starting XI, putting a shot wide just before the break.
But Gelhardt's last-gasp strike sealed the points and snapped a six-match losing streak to give the Whites a huge boost in their battle against the drop.
This came after fellow strugglers Burnley lost to Brentford on Saturday, while Sunday's other matches at the bottom saw Watford win 2-1 at Southampton and Everton go down 1-0 at home to Wolves.
The defeat for the Toffees was particularly damaging, with Frank Lampard's side having lost their last four Premier League games and they are now out of the bottom three only on goal difference, albeit having played three fewer matches than 18th-placed Watford.
Leeds, meanwhile, pulled four points clear of the drop zone and sit 16th in the table.
Following the 2pm kick-offs, Lineker gave his verdict.
"Huge goal for @LUFC at the death," tweeted Lineker. "A win too for @WatfordFC. Really, really worried for @Everton after their defeat at home to @Wolves."
Next up for Leeds is a trip to Wolves on Friday night, while Everton host Newcastle United 24 hours earlier.
