Gary Lineker delivers Lionel Messi verdict he "wouldn't say on TV" after World Cup final

Gary Lineker has paid tribute to Lionel Messi after the superstar’s role in Argentina’s remarkable World Cup final victory over France.

Messi broke multiple records in the final and while he eventually missed out on the Golden Boot to Kylian Mbappe – whose stunning hat-trick had appeared to twice Argentina in the unforgettable showpiece event – the superstar eventually got his hands on the trophy.

Messi was once again instrumental for his nation throughout the encounter, netting twice during the six-goal thriller and also converting his penalty in the shootout at the end of the game. It was his final game of the World Cup, and he bowed out in style after starring in five editions of the tournament.

The 35-year-old had opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Angel Di Maria went down under minimal contact from Ousmane Dembele’s challenge midway through the first half, and Messi provided a clever flick in the build-up for Di Maria to double Argentina’s lead nine minutes before the break.

Messi restored Argentina’s lead in extra-time after Mbappe’s double had squared the game, and while there was still time for his PSG teammate to complete his hat-trick for France – Messi was to score in the shootout as the South American nation got their hands on the trophy.

Lineker, who fronted BBC Sport’s coverage of the final, tweeted after the match: “It’s been an absolute privilege to watch Lionel Messi for nearly 2 decades. Moment after moment of spellbinding, breathtakingly joyous football. He’s a gift from the footballing Gods. So pleased that he’s lifted the ultimate prize in our sport. Gracias y felicidades, campeón.”

The former striker had tweeted at the conclusion of the game: “Messssiiiii! Unbe-f******-lievable! I won’t say that on the telly.” While adding of the final: “Glorious. Truly glorious. Congratulations Argentina. You deserved it. Messi deserves it.”

Having been asked if he was happy at the outcome of the match, Lineker added: “I’m delighted. The greatest game I’ve ever witnessed…and the right result. The best team won.”

Messi has now played his final World Cup game by lifting the trophy, having previously clarified he would not be returning for the 2026 edition. The superstar may end his international career altogether, with a decision likely to be clarified in due course.
