Gary Glitter has appeared in court charged with a series of historic sexual offences, including three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14 and one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13.
The 82-year-old disgraced former glam rock star, born Paul Gadd, appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court via videolink, where the case was sent to the Old Bailey for further proceedings.
The charges, reported by The Sun, relate to allegations involving one complainant and concern offences alleged to have taken place between 1978 and 1981 at Glitter’s former home in Kensington and Chelsea, west London.
Prosecutors allege the complainant was aged between eight and 11 at the time of the alleged offences. According to the Metropolitan Police, the allegations were first reported on 9 January 2025.
Glitter, who is serving a prison sentence at HMP Channings Wood in Devon following previous convictions, is due to appear at the Central Criminal Court on 2 September.
It has yet to be determined whether that hearing will take place via videolink or in person.
Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC said the alleged offences took place between 1978 and 1981, when the complainant, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was aged between eight and 11.
The offences allegedly took place at Glitter’s home address in Kensington and Chelsea.
Prosecutors allege Glitter would give the girl chocolate and “invite her into his house where he then committed a number of serious sexual offences”.
Appearing by videolink wearing a blue shirt, glasses and a cap, Glitter told the court: “Your honour, excuse me, I’m extremely deaf and unless I’m lip-reading I can’t hear.
“My name is Paul Gadd.”
He then added: “Sorry, your honour, may I make a suggestion?
“If the barrister turns the volume down a little bit, it wouldn’t be so distorting in my hearing aids.”
The court heard Glitter was charged last month with one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13, alongside three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14.
Prosecutors said he was first interviewed in connection with the investigation on 22 July 2025. Police have said the complainant is being supported by specialist officers.
Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring remanded Glitter into custody and directed that the case be sent to the Old Bailey.
Addressing the defendant, Goldspring said: “You face charges that include an offence which is indictable only, which means only the crown court can deal with it.
“The other three charges are related because it’s the same complainant.
“In that circumstance, all four charges are sent to crown court, the Central Criminal Court, known as the Old Bailey, where you will appear on September 2.”
Glitter is currently serving a prison sentence that is due to expire in February 2031, when he would be almost 87.
He was first imprisoned in 1999 and later received a 16-year sentence in 2015 before being released on licence in February 2023.
The former musician is understood to deny the latest allegations.
The charges have not been tested in court, and criminal proceedings remain ongoing.
