Gary Bowyer's Dundee future has been plunged into doubt – just days after leading the Dens Park club back into the Premiership.
The experienced boss is the bookmakers’ favourite to return to former club Blackpool - while ex-St Johnstone boss Callum Davidson has been strongly linked with the Dens Park hot seat. Sporting director Gordon Strachan is set for imminent talks with the Englishman over how Dundee want to move forward.
Those discussions will go a long way to deciding whether or not Bowyer will remain at the Dens Park helm. Bowyer was appointed last summer and got Dundee back into the Premier League at the first time of asking. The 51-year-old got the job done but there were plenty at Dens Park who were unimpressed with the way the title race went to the wire.
Bowyer, who is on a rolling contract, has had spells at Blackburn Rovers, Bradford, Salford and Blackpool. Dundee face a massive rebuilding job for next season. Bowyer’s family has remained south of the border and getting closer to them could also come into his thinking.
The majority of their squad are out of contract and have still to be told whether or not those deals will be expended. The players are expected to find out their fates later this week, once Bowyer has spoken to Strachan.
Bowyer is on a rolling contract and he has become the favourite amongst bookmakers to go back for a second spell at Blackpool. He led the Seasiders to the League Two title and is well thought of there.
Blackpool have just been relegated back to that level. There are people within the Dundee hierarchy who are big fans of Davidson and the job he did with double-cup winning St Johnstone.
He is likely to be targeted if it is decided it is time for managerial change at Dens Park.
