Garth Brooks played a surprise gig on top of his tour bus the last time he played in Ireland

Garth Brooks fever is ramping up around the country with hundreds of thousands of country music fans ready to descend on Croke Park in Dublin throughout September for the US star's much-awaited shows.

He will take to the stage in GAA HQ on September 9, 10, 11, 16 and 17, eight years on from the debacle over his five cancelled Croker gigs in 2014.

The last time Brooks played Ireland was all the way back in 1997 when he lit up Croke Park with hits like Friends in Low Places, Callin Baton Rouge and The Dance.

However, when he was here in Ireland, he surprised fans in Bray with an impromptu gig on top of a bus the day before his sold-out show.

RTE News was there to soak up the atmosphere as the Texan, who was doing a link-up with US TV, jumped up onto the roof of his tour bus, broke out the guitar, and belted out his most famous hit, Friends in Low Places.

The crowd sang along loudly and cheered for the country icon.

One woman said the surprise performance was "super" labelling Brooks as "to die for."
