Gartcairn dump Drumchapel with 'exceptional' goals to boost title bid

Gartcairn gaffer Mick Dunlop reckons his side scored some ‘exceptional’ goals as they dumped Drumchapel United to give their title hopes a shot in the arm.

The MTC Park side returned to league duty for the first time since March 8 on Friday night and they found their shooting boots to earn a 3-0 victory over fellow hopefuls United.

Jordan Love opened the scoring before Darren Bowie and Regan Aitken netted in the second half to earn a vital victory that has them fifth in West of Scotland First Division, sitting nine points behind leaders Benburb but with five games in hand.

Dunlop was delighted with the quality of the goals, the latter of which saw Bowie hit home a screamer of a strike and Aitken dance through the Drumchapel defence before finding the top corner.

He said: “The second and third goals were exceptional and the second goal came at a really important time in the game. At 1-0, anything can happen but the second goal knocked the stuffing out of them.

“But, regardless of who were playing, it was really important to get three points, as it was our first league game for a few weeks because we’ve been doing so well in the cups this season.

Gartcairn boss Mick Dunlop (Lyndsay Christie)

“Given Drumchapel are one of the teams we are competing against, to go away from home and win the game so well, I’m delighted. It was a really professional performance from us.”

The games keep coming thick and fast with Gartcairn heading to bottom of the table Rossvale tonight and then they face a trip to second place St Cadoc’s on Saturday.

Dunlop added: “Rossvale are fighting for survival at the bottom of the table so we need to be prepared for that. It’s so competitive this league that everyone can beat everyone.

“It was always going to be a big week for us with the three games. We’ve only got one out of the three so far so we need to follow this up now.”
