Gareth Southgate has warned about putting too much “pressure” on Phil Foden.
England boss Southgate insists Foden will have “an important part to play” at the World Cup but warned of the dangers of all the spotlight being on him. There has been a huge public clamour for the Manchester City star to start against Wales after he was left on the bench against the United States.
Southgate admits he recognises the push for 22-year-old Foden from similar campaigns to get Jack Grealish or Marcus Rashford into starting line-ups. Southgate said: “We have to be careful because we are putting a lot of pressure on him now. We’re a team and we need all of the players and they can all play a part but not any one of them is the reason we will win or lose.
