Gareth Southgate sends 'mismanagement' warning to Chelsea over Roman Abramovich takeover

Gareth Southgate has praised Thomas Tuchel for his management of Chelsea's current situation and believes the club will survive due to the consistency of their supporters.

The German coach has drawn a great deal of praise with how he has dealt with the vast number of questions surrounding Chelsea amidst Russia's war in Ukraine leading to Roman Abramovich being sanctioned by the UK government, as well as how he has handled the uncertainty around the club's future as it was put up for sale.

The Blues have undergone another turbulent week as the club initially asked for their FA Cup match against Middlesbrough to be played behind closed doors after being unable to come to an agreement to amend the licence placed upon them to sell tickets to supporters, before seeing the EU place sanctions on Abramovich which appear to mean their Champions League quarter-final match will be played without fans too.

Raine Group, the company responsible for Chelsea's sale have set a deadline of Friday for any prospective bid to be placed. Nevertheless, Tuchel has continued to guide Chelsea to wins and drew the praise of the England manager.

Southgate said: "They haven't called me [to discuss the situation]. What's happening at Chelsea isn't my business really but I would say football clubs will go on. Football clubs generally unless there's gross mismangement survive. Players come and come and managers come and go, the fans keep the consistency of the football clubs.

"Players are adaptable, they are used to change. They are used to changes of managers - certainly at that club. Thomas has dealt with it really well. The players have shown with their performances on the pitch, they continue to win matches, their focus seems to be good."

The Three Lions boss was further asked about the considerations which go into approving owners, and whether the owners and directors test used needs to be changed.

He said: "That's a matter for the Premier League and the government. I don't know what those tests entail. I think it'll be too easy to say we should have one nationality or other moving forward because some of the clubs that have found themselves in real trouble have had British owners.

"If there's a debate beyond fit and proper, what are good owners and what aren't and what the perception of that would. There's a lot of reflection for all of us in what's going on in the world at the moment in various industries. And football is a big part of that."

Mason Mount and Reece James were both called up by Southgate for friendlies against Switzerland and Ivory Cost, as was Conor Gallagher who is on loan at Crystal Palace. His teammate and former Blue Marc Guehi also made the cut for the first time while Tammy Abraham was also selected for the friendlies.

James' selection is unlikely to have went down well at Chelsea as the England international attempts to return from injury once again having missed three matches after suffering a setback soon after returning from a two-month absence.
