Gardening pros swear by this ingenious tomato-watering trick — try it for juicier, plumper tomatoes

Fresh and colorful tomato plant.

Tomatoes are among the most popular home-grown crops. Whether you are an experienced gardener or just starting out, they are a top choice. There’s something especially rewarding about growing this delicious summer staple that is always a joy to pick and enjoy straight from the vine.

We’ve shared plenty of tomato-growing tips at Tom’s Guide, including how to grow tomatoes from seeds and when to fertilize tomatoes, and right now we’re going to share a tomato-watering hack that gets to the root of your plants.

Water deeply

On Instagram, Germany-based homesteaders @chrisundmariana recently shared a favorite tomato-growing hack they’ve used for years. “A lot of people ask why we plant pots next to our tomatoes,” they noted. While it might look unusual to beginners, this simple technique is a game-changer for all gardeners.

“When we plant our tomatoes, we place the pot right next to the roots,” they say in their Instagram post. It’s not placed beside the plant, but buried in the soil, with the top of the pot aligning with the top of the soil.

What’s more, they already have the pots on hand, since they were used to grow the seedling before transplanting. This is the kind of money-saving hack we love at Tom’s Guide — reusing what you already have in your yard.

“When it’s time to water, we pour the water directly into the pot instead of watering all around the plant,” say the couple. “The water goes straight down to the roots where the tomato actually needs it most.”

Apart from saving water, as there’s less chance for it to evaporate, it helps develop a resilient root system.

And happy tomato roots mean a happy plant, as steady hydration prevents extreme wet-to-dry soil changes that can lead to blossom end rot and fruit cracking. You get a healthier, sweeter and more flavorful crop.

I've even tried the hack out on my own tomato plants. It's super quick to embed a pot into a container or directly into your yard. Then all you have to do is water the pot to ensure the roots get deep water.

Don't forget to give your plants an extra water when first transplanted

They share an extra tip when first transplanting your tomatoes: “For the first couple of weeks after planting, we still water from the top and into the pot while the roots are getting established.”
