Garden waste collections delayed across Cardiff due to council backlog

Garden waste collections on Thursday and Friday have been delayed across parts of Cardiff due to a backlog. Cardiff Council announced the delays on Thursday, March 24, and said that waste crews will be working over the weekend to clear excess.

The council said the accumulation was due to a high volume of garden waste being presented for collection this week. The authority urged people to leave their garden waste on the kerbside if it has been missed and assured it will be collected as quickly as possible. On Thursday, the delays will affect Trowbridge, Old St Mellons, Llanrumney and Rumney.

On Friday, collections in Tongwynlais, Rhiwbina, Llanishen, Lisvane and Cyncoed will be affected. The backlog had also affected parts of Llandaff, but a Cardiff Council spokesperson confirmed that most of the collections were completed on Wednesday and the remainder will be collected on Thursday.

Llandaff councillor Sean Driscoll said it was "disappointing" that there is no collection in winter and many residents would like to see a collection at least once a month in this period. "I watched them yesterday on Ely Road. It’s a tough job and the garden waste team work really hard to clear some really full bins," he said.

However, he added that he and residents were "really grateful" that council officers helped him to organise a community leaf sweep in the Insole Estate and Waungron Road in November last year. A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: "Due to the high volume of garden waste presented for collection this week, we are experiencing some delays in collections today, which will also impact garden waste collections tomorrow. Waste crews will be working over the weekend to clear the backlog, but if your garden waste isn’t collected as scheduled, please leave it on the kerbside and it will be collected as quickly as possible."
