Gardai have warned road users of a common rule break that could result in all occupants of the vehicle being handed fines if caught.
The Naas Roads Policing Unit were on patrol when they stopped a vehicle speeding on the N7.
After pulling the driver over for this offence, it was found that the two passengers sitting in the back of the car were not wearing seatbelts.
It is understood that the driver was fined for speeding, and both passengers were handed Fixed Charge Notices for not strapping themselves in.
A spokesperson took to the Garda Traffic Twitter and confirmed: “Naas Roads Policing Unit stopped this car for speeding on N7 recently, where it was found that the 2 rear seat passengers not were not wearing seatbelts.
“FCPNs were issued to both the driver and passengers.”
The RSA website says: “If you are over 17, the law states that you are responsible for wearing your seatbelt.
“Apart from the risk of being seriously injured, you are also at risk of being fined a max of €2,000 if you are caught not wearing your seat belt" - if convicted in court.
You can be fined €60 on the spot if you are not strapped in properly, and you must either pay this fine within 28 days or face an increased fine of €90 payable within 56 days of the offence.
Three penalty points will also be added to your licence if you choose to pay the fine and not go to court.
However, if you are convicted in court for not wearing a seatbelt, four penalty points will be added to your licence and you will be given the max fine of €2,000.
