Gardai seek video footage of Westmeath area where car fire killed two children

Gardai are seeking video footage from the area where a car blaze took the lives of two young children in Co Westmeath.

An appeal was issued this evening asking anyone who was in the Lacken, Multyfarnham, whether they were a road user or on foot, who may have footage from between 2pm and 4pm on Friday 9 September to get in touch. They are also urging anyone with information to contact them.

It has recently emerged that investigators believe the car fire was started deliberately. Gardai are also understood to know who carried out the horrendous attack.

Siblings Thelma Dennany, five, and two-year-old Michael died in the horror blaze in Multyfarnham. Their mother Lynn Egar, who is in her 40s, suffered life-changing injuries in the incident.

She had been pulled from the car by a passing lorry driver, who also managed to get the two children out. However, toddler Michael died at the scene of the incident and Thelma lost her fight for life shortly after she was rushed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Tullamore, Co Offaly.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí at Mullingar are carrying out a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of 2 year old Mikey Dennany and 5 year old Thelma Dennany in a fatal car fire at Lacken, Multyfarnham, County Westmeath on Friday, 9th September, 2022. An Garda Síochána continue to appeal to any person with any information in relation to this fatal incident to contact them.

"In particular Investigating Gardaí are appealing for any road users or other persons who were in the in the Lacken, Multyfarnham area on Friday 9th September between 2pm and 4pm who has any video footage (dashcam or other form) to make that footage available to the investigation team. The Incident room at Mullingar Garda Station can be contacted on 044 9384000, or contact the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

"A Garda family liaison officer continues to keep the family updated at this time. The criminal investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow."
