Gardai release full details for Ashling Murphy funeral as thousands expected to pay respects

Ashling Murphy will be laid to rest in Co Offaly on Tuesday morning with thousands of mourners expected to pay their respects.

The 23-year-old's funeral Mass will be held in St Brigid's Church in Mountbolus at 11am with her burial afterwards in Lowertown Cemetery.

The funeral cortege will leave Ashling's home at 10.30am before arriving at the church.

Gardai said they anticipate that the funeral will attract "a large attendance" as they released the operational details in full on Monday night.

People attending are asked to assist gardai and stewards with parking, with parking to be provided as follows:

People leave flowers and messages at a vigil to remember Ashling Murphy at Tullamore Town Park (Collins)
  • Traffic from Tullamore will be directed into Killoughey GAA grounds.
  • Traffic from Birr/Idle corner will be accommodated in a green field site at Murrays.
  • Traffic arriving via Ballyboy will be accommodated in a green field site at Dalys.

Gardai will be on duty to manage traffic and parking and are reminding people to be vigilant when it comes to public health guidelines.

A spokesperson said: "An Garda Síochána reminds persons attending that Covid-19, Omicron variant continues to be a significant Public Health concern.

"Public Health advice remains that persons unable to social distance or in crowded outdoor areas should wear appropriate face coverings."

It comes as gardai issued a renewed appeal for information into Ashling's murder and released further details about a person of interest.

Gardai are currently examining the scene around a bottle bank in the town as part of the probe as they wait to question a suspect who is being treated at a Dublin hospital.

In their latest update, officers asked for people with any information pertinent to the investigation to come forward.

They also released further details about a man seen walking in Tullamore around the time of Ashling's murder.

Members of the force are asking the public if they recall seeing a man dressed in a black tracksuit top and bottoms with a large white stripe or white writing on the side and black runners on Wednesday afternoon.

They added that the investigation is progressing but would not confirm any specific details "for operational reasons".

Gardai also cautioned people about sharing information on social media about the investigation.
