Gardai probe allegations two teenage girls were sexually assaulted twice by the same men

Gardai were last night probing shock allegations that two teenage girls were each sexually assaulted twice — by the same men.

The Star has learned that detectives investigating the horrific incident in Sligo town on Saturday night believe both girls were targeted in one location — and then followed and attacked again.

“They suffered a terrible ordeal,” a source said last night, as gardai carried out a major investigation into the incident.

Sources have told The Star that both girls — who are just 14 — have been left badly traumatised after their nightmare ordeal.

And sources also revealed that the two suspects for the brutal attack are in their early 20s.

It’s understood the girls’ ordeal after they went out in Sligo on Saturday evening and fell into the company of the two young men.

The suspects brought them to one location where it is alleged each girl suffered a serious sexual assault.

Sources said the girls managed to leave the area after that attack.

But the two men then followed the girls and are alleged to have sexually assaulted them in the grounds of St Mary’s GAA grounds at Ballydoogan in the town.

The traumatised girls then managed to escape and later raised the alarm.

Both locations where the sexual assaults were alleged to have happened were later cordoned off — as gardai searched for clues.

And as part of their investigation, gardai were also keen to speak to a taxi driver who took a fare from Sligo to outside the town on Saturday night — but it’s understood that taximan came forward yesterday and provided a statement to gardai.

Detectives investigating the attack appealed for witnesses to come forward last night.

A Garda spokesman said: “Gardaí in Sligo are appealing for witnesses in relation to a number of alleged assaults that occurred near Sligo Town yesterday evening, Saturday, 22nd, January 2022.

“Gardaí are keen to speak to anyone who was in the Ballydoogan, Oakfield and Maugheraboy areas of Sligo, between 8pm — 10pm and who noticed any activity which caught their attention, whether they think it may be of relevance or not.

“Any road users who may have been travelling through these areas and who may have dash-cam footage is also asked to make this available to Gardaí.”

There have been no arrests so far, but gardai are following a definite line of inquiry.
